The student was an African-American and I'm a North West European American who has received training in multi cultural education. Due to my training I immediately recognized the students response as inappropriate. This was a teachable moment. I told the student that a more appropriate response for him would be "Yo, git oudda my face". The student merely said "I'm sorry". I could see this was going to be a hard sell.
So I explained to him that in order for him to take pride in himself and his race that he must understand and respect his cultural background. This would of course raise his scores on standardized tests, bring up his grades and cut done on discipline problems. The students response was to say "Look, I said I'm sorry. Leave me alone". I could see that I was getting through to him - - just a little more explanation.
I suggested that he should walk away with an extra bounce in his step. Furthermore, that he should say "Mudder ******* teacher" very softly. This should be said loudly enough to be heard but softly enough to be denied if confronted. I explained that this is a win win situation. You get to call a teacher names and then accuse him of racism for unfair discipline. The student's response was that I was a racist for trying to tell him how to act. He came up was some radical idea about how all students should be treated the same.
I explained to student that Board of Education's philosophy was that every body was equal but since some people are more equal than others it was necessary to make some people believe that they were better than others unless it was somebody else's fault. The student's response was "Man, your crazy - - you don't know what your talking about". He then walked away and said very softly "ass hole".
I had done my job.
